Eyelid Correction – Blepharoplasty
Social interaction between people starts with eye contact.
Our first impressions about someone are formed by his/her looks. Therefore, an impressive look has a key role in social communication.
Facial aging gives its first signs around the eyes. The most common signs of facial aging are lower eyelid bags and upper eyelid skin excess. Even though these problems look simple, they need maximum attention to be evaluated, and their solutions are that much detailed, because of the complicated anatomy of the eyelids.
Mainly, upper eyelid correction includes excision of the excess skin and removal of the protruding fatty tissue (if present). For the lower eyelids, the problem is a little more complicated. Eyelid bags are fat herniations through the weakened barrier tissue which normally keeps the eyelid fat in place. It is possible that amount of the mentioned fat is more or less than normal. The correction operations aim to preserve the needed amount of fat, to redistribute it properly, and to increase the strength of anatomic barriers.
Blepharoplasty operations can be done under local anesthesia, sedation or general anesthesia depending on what is really going to be done. It takes between half an hour to two hours. Hospital stay is generally not needed. The patient can return to daily life within a couple of days, but one should know that bruises and swelling may last for a week. Because of the superior healing quality of the eyelid skin, scars are not a problem in this area.
Blepharoplasty can be performed alone or in combination with other operations like face lift, brow lift or neck lift. When compared to other plastic surgery operations, eyelids heal more rapidly, exhibiting the expected results within a couple of months.
